running problem....yep another one!

Post by Dave_cbr400rr »

Hi
i have had my carbs all rebalanced, and require new air screws (am in contact with Greame France to get some new ones)
but have now got another lil problem and am wondering weather its to do with the air screws!?
its only done it to me once so far.... but it starts up ok but as soom as you give it some gas its as if it chokes up. it just knocks and the revs bonce from 1k to zoro but tick-over is smooth apart from the klicking /knocking noise.... sounds like it has a fuel problem to me but wondered if any of you have any other ideas. it doesn't sould very nice...
guess it doesn't help that my Sarter fuse is all corroded and a lil temprimental ether!

If you can help it would help me out alot!
Many thanks!

"but it starts up ok but as soom as you give it some gas its as if it chokes up."

at what RPM does it start to choke up?........ 5,000rpm by any chance?
if so check the fuses in the fuse box 1st, if all are ok then check if the connector behind your speedo is plugged in. check the connectors wiring, any loose/cut etc?

err it may choke up at 5,00 revs not sure i give it some revs and it will be fine but then try again and it doesn't like it and knocks.
You think it may be electrical problem?
when i give it full gas it just tickes over but with a thud, carbs are all mechanial arn't they but guess it could be electrical... never thought of that! i will check the fuse tomorrow. thanks mate! if you think of anything else i would love to hear it!
Many thanks!

if its the fuse/speedo con/wire the symptoms will be that it runs smooth until 5K RPMs then run on 2 cylinders and wont sound any good anywhere past 5k, drop the revs below 5k and its fine again.

ah really... that sounds likley.... ido rev it past5thousand revs then it does it... fuse is ok so now i will just look for a wire from speedo or something....
Have you ever had this problem before then? you sound like you know what ur on about :D
Thanks

aye, had to do a bit of homework before i could sell the de-limiter kits (ebay), like to know about something before i attempting it. + i had it happen to me a few yrs ago and again last winter. riding my bike 20 miles back home while in restriction mode was not easy! fuse kept on blowing on me. cause was a short in the side light wire.

its related to the 112mph speed restriction that NC23 1989, NC29 and NC30s have built in to the CDI units.
the other end of the restrictor is inside your speedo in the form of a light sensor that waits for a disk set at 112mph to cut through the beam and signalling the CDI unit to shut down 2 spark plugs.
there are several ways to by-pass this (will go in to that later)

meanwhile.....
if any part of the restriction signal is broken between the CDI and the sensor it automatically puts the bike in to restriction mode after 5K rpm but runs fine under 5K.
so.. what to look for:
fuse to dash lights, horn, indicators, headlight and brake lights- stops power being fed to sensor.
loose wires/corroded/cut wires in the connector block behind the speedo. its a small 3 pin job
CDI end of bike... main connector loose, or wires broken etc.

do you already have a de-limiter fitted? this may have broken down.
various by-passes that would cause this are:
resistor in the small 3 pin connector behind speedo
resistor fitted in to the CDI connector wires
M-Max box behind speedo plugged in to 3 pin con

the rest are mechanical de-limiters
manual kph to mph converter
removal of the disk that cuts the sensor beam.

wow! theres alot to it then!
are they all restricted then cos to my knollege its never been restricted.... but i don't have alot of history with the bike so i guess i wouldn't know.... i know the CDI is to do with ignition but thats about it!
ok i will have to set a Day aside to find the fault.... best make it 2...haha!
at least is points me in some idea of what it could be! Thanks mate! really appriciate it!

ooh there maybe something else to look at ....
the side stand switch. i remember someone having similar issues a few months back.. turned out to be that.
again loose wire causing it

first thing you should check is your battery...if its in poor condition,it plays havoc on the electrics...ie,the bike doesnt rev...summin to check anyways

i didn't think the sidestand had a sensor on the nc23's...? but i don't know much about them.
the Battery is ok (but good to know) :)
yeah think it has alot to do with electrics, but hasn't done the problem since. (Touch Wood)!
think there is alot of corroded connections on the thing so i guess i can just go around replacing them....
