fzr400rr kent race cams

Post by Street »

fzr400rr kent race cams, anyone got experience with these in an FZR400RR. I have been offered a good second hand set and would like to know what...

...performance improvement to expect
...effect on reliability
...is the second hand value for a pair

Any experience of kent racing cams, good or bad, i'd be interested to hear - thanks

I've got Kent Cams in my Bimota but you really need the rest of the engine modded to get the full effect. You at least need slotted cam wheels to allow them to be timed properly.
The Cams will allow the valves to stay open longer so getting more mixture into the cylinders so you get more bang for your buck.

The Bimota however takes a bit of revs to get going, there isn't much below 4000 rpm, and it likes to accelerate. They were £240 to have them reground. A reasonable mod for a race bike.

Went to collect another engine purchase and see the Kent Cams - when I got there no cams? Said he left them at his other workshop by mistake and they weren't available to view.

Talking to the guy he recons an additional 10bhp when kent race cams are fitted to the fzr400; now that sounds a lot to me, what do you think?

It was a four hour drive to get there but for 10bhp I'd go back for a look!

Nah - not 10hp.
The bike should rev faster but don't give that much, otherwise all those engines that quote 70hp would be up on 80 ;)
Why not get in touch with Kent Cams and ask what you should expect ???

you will need to know the lift & duration, there not just a drop em in and go thing, as for 10bhp dream on ! if it was that easy to gain 10bhp every body would have them in buddy.

I personally wouldn't bother with Kent cams on the RR. It's an expensive way of adding a maximum of about 4BHP to a standard engine. A lot of hassle for the gain unless you're going down the full gas flow and port polish route along with new flywheels, etc.

It all varies to be honest

Most cams are profiled to spec of motor say for example fast road/race/full blown etc etc...
You can forward your own cams to kent on exchange or 1 off basis to specs that suit.Had quite a few from them..good bunch

10 bhp....yes please lol

What specs are the regrind cams you guys are running? I've found a place here that will do them for $120 each but they need to know the duration and lift i want. This will be running in a yzf600 head(4JH). I don't want to have to run after market springs so the most lift i think i can go with is .330 on the inlet and maybe .320 on the exhaust, something similar to the megacycle 276-x8.

I've looked at the kentcams catalogue and they seem to be almost the same lift as stock on all but their fzr600 race cam. If the fzr600 race cam specs are anything to go by I'll just run a spare inlet cam on the exhaust side and just get the inlet cam reground for the extra lift and slightly more duration.
