Oil Leak from Water Pump drive
Hi I have an oil leak coming from behind the water pump.
Just had a look and I can see there is a small hole on the rear of the water pump in between the pump and the engine and it looks like that is were the oil is coming from.
Checked the coolent to make sure oil is not getting into that and so far so good.
I am assuming there is a drive shaft that comes from the engine and spins the pump and there is a seal on the shaft.
Has any one had to replace this seal and can it be done without opening the engine??
The bike is a 1990 RR 3TJ
Thanks for any help you can give

Re: Oil Leak from Water Pump drive
I had the same seal fail on my YZF. Seeing as they are prety much the same animals then you need the seal kit for the impeller.
It is easy to replace, once I got the kit I did mine in an hour.
The water pump will be bolted on with 2 bolts adn the whole unit slide out of the casing (where it is driven by the oil pump)
simple job, costs about A£30 in parts and anyone can do it..
(circlip pliers a definite bonus)

Thanks for the info will look into getting a kit.
Just glad the seal should be easy to replace without having to take the engine to bits.

Re: Oil Leak from Water Pump drive
The 400 water pump has a non replaceable seal. The impeller is pressed/bonded on to the seal and begind that is the casing with the weep hole and the bearing.
I had an impeller come off on a track day and ruined my day because I had no spare and had to abandon it.

Re: Oil Leak from Water Pump drive
Just spoken to the people at Fowlers and they have just said the same as Plodder the seal only comes with the water pump @ £190 odd
Has any one got a good water pump for sale.
Or can you get a seal kit as suggested by CMSMJ1

That is harsh!!
I would go with Plodder, he is the FZR guru - I am more of a Honda man myself...and have only had detailed mechanical work on a YZF750 and an exup thou...

Ahh, sweet.
Beasthonda, you have a PM that should solve your palputations
The YZF750/FZR1000 pump is rebuildable as I understand it but good spares are usually cheaper.

Re: Oil Leak from Water Pump drive
I just wanted to say thanks for this. I had been troubleshooting an oil leak behind the water pump and I think the water pump seal (internal) was the culprit and not the external o-ring. I found a Honda part number that's easier in the US to find (91201-MF2-003) that is the same size.beasthonda wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2010 3:00 pmWater pump all fixed now
