Basic maintenance here...
I have a warped disc, and a friend has given me a pair, but I'm about to go change them, and cant for the life of me remember how to get the front end up without a paddock stand?
I have car jacks, axle stands etc
Whats the best way of getting it off the floor so it stays stable?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOB

I can tell you how not to do it! Don't use an engine crane, the bike will tip it over!

engine crane is the best way I think..
Get a toe rope and run it under the engine
keep it even!
use a rear padock stand if possible.

Um, just get a front paddock stand, i know some of them are a bit trying to get to the spindle, but that's the preferred tool of choice. Much safer than hoisting it. To remove my forks, I use a ratchet strap under the top yoke and hoist it up on a strong beam I (luckily) have in my shed. Make sure it's on a rear paddock stand is you do this though!
You can also get paddock stands that go into the bottom yoke hole, although i've never looked to see if i could get one the correct fitment.

Lol, just dont be such a n00b and go out and buy the correct stand for the bike. If you try and bodge it with anything you are just asking it to fall over!!

Yeah, what he said!Varcon wrote:Lol, just dont be such a n00b and go out and buy the correct stand for the bike. If you try and bodge it with anything you are just asking it to fall over!!
You can do it with a hoist to a roof beam like I did, with an axle stand under the engine across the frame spars to stop it twisting. I did the same with an engine crane, but that twisted and pulled it over. If you have a rear paddock stand, it should be more stable, but i'd look for the right tool really.

i use an abba stand. Best investment for working on bikes apart from a lifting table for me. Highly recommended

My mates got a sliding winch on a steel H beam in his garage. when we changed my swing arm we took the pannels off the rear of my bike then used the winch to raise it about 2ft.

Fair enough, if the only safe way is paddock stands then so be it!
Just wanting to be sure there wasn't another way before spending the money!
