Rear wheel not moving freely?

Post by Snap »

Whilst I had the bike in the paddock stand I noticed that the rear wheel wasnt turning freely. I took off the rear caliper and span the wheel and it was the same. I slackened the chain and still the same.

Is the wheel meant to drag or should it be free moving when turning it by hand? What could be the problem with my lack of free movement from the rear wheel?

Thanks.

It should move fairly freely. You can always slacken the chain off so much you can take it off the sprocket and see then.

If it's still not moving (the chain will create a little drag) you might have knackered bearings. Is there any play in the wheel when moved side to side and up and down (9pm / 3pm) & (12pm / 6pm) hand positions to rock the wheel

My NC35 wont spin, i need to invest in a roller fitted stand. Could this be your problem?

is it one of them paddock stands that goes inside the hollow axle, ie single sided swinging arm type?
That could be where the drag is coming from.

Or one that attaches to the frame?
What sort of bike are we looking at here?

That'd be my guess too. Does your bike wheel about ok? Or does it bind on the move too?
How hard can it be?

whilst on the LHS of the bike gently pull it towards you on the side stand then spin the wheel. you'll then know if it's the paddock stand
attention 2 detail - bike valeting and more
