charging issues...again

Post by hardnutdvd »

I was out and about on the NC30 yesterday evening and all was going well for a couple of hours until the bike died on me...
the battery was flat! I just so happened to have a multimeter on me ;)
battery was reading 10v..no dash lights or anything.....

I pushed the beast about 3 miles towards home and thought id see if it would restart.
i had bright dash lights? but it wouldnt turn over or start on the button. it did bump though.
with half a mile to go i rode gently home! (i cant tell you how pleased i was as it was boiling hot and i was half dead! lol)

anyway, when i got the bike home i tested battery again and it was reading 25v....again it wouldnt start on the button but there was a clicking sound coming from somewhere when the start button was pushed.

I'm assuming i will need a new rectifier and battery, but is there any other parts i should be testing for faults... starter motor, coil??

I don't think its possible to get 25v out of a 12v battery unless some of the cells have ruptured into one another ?!?

reg/rec and battery would be my best guess.

When my old one had a reg/rec issue (fried battery) I changed the reg/rec, battery and alternator. Seems like a big outlay at the time but at least you know it's all new!!

Check the alternator output, if you do a search on here there should be deatils on output voltages from the 3 yellow wires.

(The click is the starter solenoid I believe, although that's usually the case with a flat battery, not sure about the 25v?!)

i am not mechanically minded but the meter was defo reading 25v.....

when the bike died it was 10v.. which i know is not enough power

after the half mile ride home it must have been getting juiced up with totally unregulated power from the stator?
lucky it didnt explode or something and blow my balls off!! lol

EDIT...is there a battery thats recommended by everyone or are they all generally the same?

As long as its the right physical size to fit the battery tray and it has a 9AH capacity you could fit a box of golf balls if you wanted. lol

That thread just says to get the 9AH rather than something smaller, 9AH is the standard fitment iirc.
