nc30 rear shock question
Right,ive started my new project, to rebuild my 91' nc30 RC30 replica, ive started with cleaning it down, but the first job is the rear shock. Having ridden it for 6 months i knew that the rear shock was totally knackered.
As i see it ive got 4 options for a replacement. Firstly is, ive got a rebuilt early shock without remote it was removed from my other project. Secondly send the original shock away for a rebuild, thirdly ive got an rs250 shock which needs rebuilding and resprung, fourth a new race shock.
Im going to be using the bike as my everyday bike for road use only.
Just wondered on peoples thought on the diffrences on each shock. Obviously the cheapest option is fitting the early shock, but i just wondered how they perform with the later shock and the rs250 one.

if money is no object go for the full race unit,but it's maybe a bit over kill for whats going to be an everyday use bike, maybe the RS250 shock rebuilt is a better option as it's going to proform better than the standard shocks once rebuild and am i right in saying the RS shocks offer more adjustment in them too ie rebound,compression etc.
i know alex has a standard shock rebuilt so ilook forward to hearing what he's going to say about it.

I seem to think Alex was very impressed with his rebuild.
Is the rs shock a straight fit?, I read somewhere that i might need some sort of bracket??
Spose next question, where is the best place to get them rebuilt and resprung??

cmsmj1,mark, runs an RS item and i think you have to file down the top and bottom mounts as the top is too wide and the bottom too thin but i'm sure he'll be along soon.
if the RS is going to be the better job (cause of the more adjustments) i'd get it done as i don't think it'll be any cheaper to get the stock shocks rebuilt, as for who to do it ......no idea.....kais ? brooks( think they are called that) ?

Personally, I'd go the RS250 route, but there's nothing wrong with a rebuilt early shock either (aside from maybe heat issues). Here's a link with the mods you need to do to fit an RS250 shock (no longer on here as the guy who pioneered this went walkabout years ago):

Would advice to go down the route of getting that RS250 shock on. It definately needs a new spring coil to suit your weight and bike ratio (the standard RS250 spring coil is way too weak for the job). I've performed this mod a while ago on ex-NC30, resprung a early type shock with new Hyperpro NC30 spec'd coil but that option was still too weak, so I ended up with an Yammy R1 spring coil. For me that was perfect and improved the handling with much more feel, all together with Rick Oliver's front fork suspension kit. File away few mm on each side of the lower triangle linkage as per instruction on the link. Easy job.

Yep - I've had mine fitted for a few years now and it was the best mod I've done...
I bought an 875lb spring, had it regassed and an extra rebound shim added to the stack.
It is tired now and probably deserves a refresh but even now it is much better than std. The ride height boost is also a bonus.
filing the lower fork or filing the linkage knuckle ius up to you - I filed the knuckle. Also the top of the shock needs a smidgin taking off it to get it in and not interfere. Literally a few strokes of a file.
It also has compression and rebound and takes a proper C spanner for preload adjustment.
For no more than £150 you can have a fresh spring and it rebuild lovely....get on it!

just fitted the rs shock i got from rileys bike and the difference is amazing bike now turns in quicker due to the increase in ride height and the damping is more controlled than the hagon unit that was on it .
