NC Problem, please help!

Post by big stink »

How does a fucked regulator/rectifier affect the running at tickover. My 30 just wont rev at 1000rpm, it pops and farts at tickover and its charging at 17-18 volts. Has the regulator blown something like the coil? Had the carbs off for a good clean so i dont think thats the problem.
Any suggestions.....

Unplug the rectifier now..!!! Stop running it iat 18v! Sheesh..the battery will boil your nuts off!

If anything it will have killed your battery so you are running like a bag of spanners on no power.

Get another battery that is fully charged, leave the reg rec unplugged and run it. If there are still problems then we have something else gone pop...

Anymore than circa 14.4 volts and your destroying the battery.

Reg/Rec is dead for a start.. i'd be suspicious of the battery if you've been charging it at that, it might not last very long (if theres any life left in it)

The battery is new, only done about 60 miles. Have i damaged a coil? Why is it running poor on low revs/tickover?

18V is way too high.. it means the reg/rec is DEAD.. you need a new one.. you can't fix it.

You need to find out why it's died though.

And running a battery with that much voltage for even as little as 5 minutes can kill it.

Rule of thumb on a VFR is that if a battery EVER dies make sure it is just old age not reg/rec, genny.

The charging system composes of 3 parts.

Generator : Reg/Rec : Battery

Your Reg/Rec is DEAD, probably the battery too!

you now need to check if the generator is ok.

If so replace Reg/Rec and probably battery.

Ok , will sort out a new regulator no probs, however the battery is reading 12.99 volts , could it be that when under load/running the voltage is dropping so that would explain the poor tickover? Do you think that i might just get away with a new reg?

You need to check the battery voltage after a charge and then also when running the bike.

It is likely to have been damaged along with the generator itself and probably the connectors in that system.

Would the CDI unit have a hard time? Thinking i might have blown that, to explain the poor running?

Have you fitted a nice and freshly sorted battery to it?

You want a battery with over 13v charged. This will run the bike for 20 mins no worries...

If your current battery says it is charged but does not run the bike it is dead..

CDIs kind of work or they don't.

Sounds like you are running it off a flat battery and so rough as toast running.

The Reg/Rec is a know weak link on these bikes as they overheat and die. Replace it with an upgraded one which is finned to assist cooling (available from Graeme france and others) or an alrenative like an R6 item. Once done you should (hopefully) never have problems again with the Reg/rec.

Follow the flow chart here and it will tell you exactly what is wrong with your charging system:
