Thats a starter solenoid which is probably making a funny noise as your battery is dead.

next
switch off ignition, set meter to ohms check for continuity between green and earth.
next
check resistance between any 2 yellow terminals should get between 0.1 and 1 ohms
if you don't get the results above you will need to check wiring between battery and rectifier.
if the wiring is ok, probably a faulty rectifier.

If you plan to do any work on the bike yourself, it would be well worth getting a haynes manual there is more info in there about the resistance reading you should get testing all the connections on the rectifier.
hope this helps
P.S. i am not an electrical expert, and i am sure there people on here with far more knowledge about this that could give more/better advice.
Thanks for the help - much appreciated - but yes I think I better get hold of a Haynes manual going forward.

At least we have a long weekend coming up so should be able to find some time to get this sorted.

Just a quick update.

Tried the battery from my other bike and the NC30 started up just fine - good times.

Now just need to get a new battery and then go about checking the reg/rectifier to see if it was that killed it...

Thanks for the help.
