I have a 35 CDI with 35 pick up genny.
Yes i tried the car battery hook up today, and it tried to start, then i think i over heated the starter motor, as the starter relay was clicking, but the starter motor didn't turn. I left it for a while cleaned the carbs.
The battery is low on power again, and when i took the spark plugs out and turned the bike over it was missing, and the battery had a load voltage of 10v.
I will try to get a new battery tomorrow, and try running the starter for 5 - 8 secs, then leave it and try it again.

CMSMJ1 wrote:You are running an RVF CDI and RVF pulse generator aren't you? Seems strange that you get sparks, fuel and probably air..

120 is too rich in jetting for 35 carbs unless you don't run an airbox etc..

Can you give us a basic what's what ref your pulse generator swap? timing is possibly out??

Not sure what you mean "ref pulse genny"??
I bought a pulse genny of fleabay and installed it as per RVF, on the left hand side mounting as you look at it.
I had a feeling that it might be the timing but unsure if that was possible?
I have changed the jets back to 110 back and front

Hi Mate,

Have you swopped the starter clutch from the RVF too as the timing marks are different?

Hi Mike,
No i haven't, but will swap it in a min.
I just tried to jump it to check the spark at the plugs, and non were sparking?
I tried 2 different CDI's and nowt. It seemed to miss yesterday but it was firing but today nothing.
i have checked the valve clearances and all are spot on.
I checked the voltage to the coils when i was turning the engine over and it was only 0.3v
Does this sound like it might be an earth fault?
The coils checked out ok as per manual on the resistance side primary and secondary.

I also cleaned teh carbs again last night so they should be fine.

cheers

I have swaped the starter clutch for the rvf one and still no spark :(
Is it possible that i have fried the cdi's buy trying to jump it off my car?

I don't think a car battery jump would fry anything, they are the same voltage as bike batteries of your type.

A ground fault would likely cause all sorts of electrical problems.

0.3v to the coils would seem to indicate a bad connection or failed part upstream of the coils or a bad ground at the coils.

Does your rev counter move when the engine turns over ?

The pulse generators supply timed ignition pulses to the CDI which adjusts the timing advance to match the engine speed and sends the ignition pulses to the coils. Being as the bike is a 12v system you should expect around 12 at the coils. The manual i have got lists this on page 16:2 for the NC30. (i think)

If you have checked the coils and CDI as well as the coil grounding it must be the pulse generators ?

Just turned the engine over, and the rev counter doesn't really move it might have a very very small twitch, but not really move.
I have not checked the CDI as i am unsure how i do an electrical test on this?
The coil resistance and pulse genny are within the limits in the manual so i am guessing that they are ok.

The CDI has a ground wire on the main connector you can check out.

If the CDI, pulse generators, coils, fuses and ground connections all check out there is only the engine stop switch left to check.

I think you might be right Old Painless, i have just been looking at the wiring diagram and i have noticed that the ground line also attaches to the headlight relay, brake/tail light and rev limiter. and since i have removed the lights for racing i am thinking that there might be a fault on that earth. Or a wire shorting from the redundent connections.
I will check it out.
It will be sods law, that once i get it running, it will rain for weeks LOL, still riding in the rain is better than not riding at all

Which tacho are you using?

You'll need an rvf tacho for the rvf cdi, an nc30 tacho won't work with it.
