'89 VFR NC30 - Wont start.
Hi,
Picked the bike up on Saturday as a non-runner got it home and took the petrol tank and air filter off, gave the filter a clean, reassembled and tried to start. The engine would turn over bit not start. Took the battery out and put it on charge overnight. Got up yesterday and plug the battery in but got the same, it will crank but won't fire. Took the air box off again and tried pouring a bit of petrol directly into the carbs left it for a few seconds and tried to start it again. This time it tried to crank a couple of times, it then shot some petrol back out of the carbs and then it sounded like the starter motor jammed as all i then got was a single click from the starter solenoid.
I decide to check all the HT leads with a spare spark plug i had lying around and all the ht leads were fine. I the took the two rear spark plugs out, they had a bit of carbon on so cleaned em up with some wet&dry and put 'em back in. Poured a bit more petrol into the carbs and tried again. same thing as above, few cranks, a spit of petrol and then the click.
Left it for a while and searched around the net for a bit. Then went back and tried to start her and she would crank fine but, again, wouldn't fire, i also noticed there was petrol leaking from the bottom of the exhaust manifold
So that's where i am now, i'm a bit lost as what to do now. I have ordered a new set of plugs that should arrive this afternoon.
cheers in advance
Russ :)
this is the first 4 stoke i have worked on so please go easy on me.

Dude
Don't pour any more petrol in the carbs! The clunk was probably a hydraulic lock as you filled the pistons up with fluid that cannot compress..
The usual suspects for an NC39 that won't start is the plugs. Also if it has been sat a while you will need ot get the carbs off and clean them. It is easy enough..there is a guide on here so get cracking
I would take all 4 plugs out and let the fuel evaporate out of the pistons and get on to the carbs - clean the crap out of the float bowls, clean the jets and all gubbins.
Putting the carbs back on is a ballache..but you'll haev to do it sometimg in your ownership and so why not straight away
Good luck - it will be very worth it when you get it going.

If you add where you are, there may well be someone close by who would be willing to assist.

Hey,
thank you both for the replies. I've just taken off the front plugs, along with most of the skin on my knuckles. The last owner said it was running up till a couple of weekes ago, so do i still need to strip the carb? It looks a little daunting compare to the little delorto on the mito lol
Just had a call from the garage, the new plugs have arrived, so i'll give them ago later.
Cheers

Re: '89 VFR NC30 - Wont start.
just to update rustyp81's thread slightly, he has pm'd me with a few more questions.
he stands at present -
after baking the plugs to remove anything left on them he tried them, she fired up and ran on choke -
he pm'd me to mention that she will not idle on her own, he can close the choke off whilst balancing with the throttle and she will tick over.
close the choke, balance with throttle she will tick over then with no throttle she will die, go straight from open choke to no choke she will die.
though he has said he is getting a misfire from the plugs ( they do sound slightly beyong it, he has ordered new ones and should be here soon )
i have so far suggested -
- checking idle adjustment
- vacuum hose connection ( i.e connected and not kinked )
- enough fuel and fresh ( and it is on )
- check the slider rail on the carbs is not stuck open causing flooding
he is nervous about removing the carbs, and i cant get down to him until next week due to my wedding ( a pain but im sure my good lady wouldnt see it like that! )
i have mentioned that it could be carb related i.e
- float heights
- blocked jets etc
- knackered carb rubbers messing with the fuel /air mixture
i have noticed he has a race can on her and i have asked if this was done shortly before the problems started as she was bought as a non runner, maybe the previous owner tried messing with the carbs after adding the can, put her back together found she would not start and give up.
but the main question is - is there anything else i could have missed that he has not yet checked??!!

Re: '89 VFR NC30 - Wont start.
Sounds right to me.
Bottom line - get them carbs off and see what they are set like - clean then, stick them back on and go from there.
Plugs will be screwed...they don't like being drowned much!
adjust the idle screw to make it sit and rev, get it hot to burn off the water in the oil and then a nice wash, lube the chain, change brake fluid and ride it!
