Battery problem

Post by Andy_998 »

Hi at the end of last years season I had a few problems with the battery as in if I left the bike for more than a week it wouldn't start without charging it first, then the problem seemed to dissapear an all was good again! Over the winter the bike hasn't been in use or started due to me stripping it for a good clean, I didn't have an optimate either so the battery just went flat, anyway since I've started riding it again there have been a few tell tail signs that there is a problem, the lights have been dimming sometimes an when plugged into the optimate I've now got even after a long ride the battery would show up not full. I got back from a ride out today an there was an awfull smell of rotton egg, so I whipped the fairing of to find the battery spitting acid an it was really hot! I ran the bike back up anyway to check the voltage it was around 13.7v on tick over an 14.2 at about 7k rpm. Do u think this is just the battery or reg/rec problem as well?

Lead acid batteries deteriorate if allowed to go flat. Fully charged you should get 13V or more. If its overflowing acid and not holding a charge id suggest a new battery for sure.. The charging system is healthy if the battery terminal voltage reads 13.5 - 15.5V at 5000rpm, and check for a short by connecting multimeter in series with one terminal & bike wiring - dc current leakage should be less than 1mA with ignition off

sounds like you've killed the battery - I'd check the charging system as well when youg et your new one - don't want a boiling battery to melt your nuts!!

That's what I was thinking mabe reg/rec is fubared an therfore over charging the battery causin it to boil an spit all the acid out! It was hotter than the sun when I removed it from the bike!! Is there a chance that when the reg/rec goes it's an intermitant problem an sometimes it will supply the correct voltage ie when I tested it at home it was fine. I'm just waiting for David silvers to send the new battery to me now. Are there any more checks I can carry out on the charging system other than the voltage across the battery, when at idle an at 5k rpm? Could really do with makin sure it's ok b4 I bang £30 battery on it an it goes bang again haha

Check the charge voltage at higher rpms, it may spike for watever reason. Not sure how much voltage it would take to boil a battery, assuming its a voltage spike that caused the damage, could also be some kind of short. Id thoroughly check the charge voltage at various rpm to get a good idea whats going on

Follow that through.. you can check the RR and the Stator outputs :)
