On going problem with charging system

Post by shivstar »

Hi I have A cbr 400rr nc23 I have had problems with my charging system and have had a new alternator, new regulator rectifier new battery and a loom from an R1 going straight from the alternator to the reg/rec it lasted only a week and a half and now the battery does not charge properly. When I turn the headlights on the charge drops to 12 volts and the bike does not accelerate like how it use to.
If any one has had this problem and solved it please let me know

Many thanks

The fact that the charging drops when the headlights are on would point to a short in the lighting side of the loom. To test for a short you need a amp meter set to high- disconnect the battery negative lead and put the negative meter probe on the battrys negative post. Put the positive probe to the neg earth lead you took from the battry. drop down the amp scale and you should have zero readings (no drain). If you have a reading you can find which part of the loom its in by taking one fuse at a time from the fuse box till it disapperes. If no short it could be the reg/rec.
