O2 Sensor on the fizzer

Post by buzzawak »

I am finding tuning the fizzer a pain in the ass. I really can't afford the dyno runs (charge a arm and a leg here in Australia).
The gap between each time I change jet is so long that I forget it the bike was better before or not. And the carbi rubbers are getting worse each time I remove the carbies. So I have decided to install a wideband O2 sensor and guage. This will allow me to get some real numbers and not go by feel alone. Maybe down the track I could expand on it and look at a fuel injection system.

So I was wondering if anyone has done this?
Any advice?
Best place to install the sensor?
I was looking at installing it at the back of the exup enclosure, so does anyone know if it is made of case iron or case steel?

You dyno should have an O2 sensor that goes down the exhaust can ... that should give a readout which lets you know if your mixture within tollerance.
however there are drain holes at the bottom of each downpipe before the exup.

I can't really see the need for a sensor to be installed, as soon as you do that you have to have measureing device and it all gets a bit unecessary. Don't even think about fuel injection you'll spend more than the cost of an R6 on it and the bike still won't run completly right.
When you ride it does it pull throught the rev range ??? if so it's right, carbs are a compromise and best to simply walk away at that point.

I would be interested in the results of this as I've set my bike up by feel and it can be a bit hit & miss.

I would just fit it to a bracket out of the end of the can and use it for test runs only. Presumably the lambda sensor can be used in conjunction with a voltmeter that you can have in mind what the normal ratio is or wire in a Wheatstone bridge so you can have normal as seo with +/- as deviation.

If you've got any information on the labda sensors already then that would be useful.

I would not bother with fuel injection though. Lots of hassle and not sure you'll get any benefit even if you set it up well. Remember using fuel injection is driven by emissions, not performance.

I got a bung welded onto my exhaust so that I could use the screw in sensor when I was at the dyno. We had issues with the tube that goes down the silencer and couldn't get a proper AF, reading this was resolved when we used the screw in sensor. All good race systems come with them ready fitted.

The bung for the 02 sensor needs to be in teh section that all downpipes have come together (obviously)and beffore the muffler. Temperature can also be a variable but doesn't matter too much on bikes because of the short exhaust.

I think the best value wideband monitors are ones with a logging ability. There are plenty of cheap wideband digital displays around but are of limited use on the track when there are other things going on and you can't watch them.

WB02 (Aussie company) are market leaders in wideband A/F logging systems. There are a few guys on the forum using them:

Thanks for the info. have looked at the site before. I found this one which is very compact and well priced http://www.14point7.com/Widebands/NAW_7S/NAW_7S.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have made up a short pipe (from 2" pipe I had) that I can take off the muffler slip on the short extension and replace the muffler. Just moved the muffler back 5cm. I have a spare narrow band sensor in the workshop so going to play with that this weekend and make up a simple LED display for it. IT would be nice to incorporate the the guts of a digital readout in the bottom left of the original tach (if the space is availble in there).

Ok bit of an update. I ended up fitting the O2 sensor into short extension pipe I made up from some 2" stock I had. So I just pop off the can put this extension on and stick the can back on. I decided to play with a narrow band sensor to start with because a friend had a new one not being uses. Got a cheap LED bar graph gauge from Jcar electronics for $20aust that I put together. I am not getting consistent readings for the sensor and I think the voltage in the gauge is a bit wild, maybe picking up some interference or something. I will spend some more time on it this weekend.

I have a wideband sensor coming (eBay) and thinking it would be cool to fit a digital readout in the OEM taco. On the face of the taco there is the room.
My problem is that the taco is a sealed unit and I would have the cut the back off to get inside to see if there is the space on the inside to fit the display.
Does anyone have a dead taco they could open up and have a look? Maybe some pictures?
