New gk76a owner, advise needed

Post by Johnny »

Hi all

I am the recent owner of a GK76 track bike.

I am looking to use it in March and wish to know if there are anything i should look out for?

I am aware of the carb seals issue so going to get them sorted.

Apart from that is there anthing else i should note as I dont want to get to a track and find it not reliable.

Also how strong are the engines. Do they hold up well under stress?

Also I may look to tuning, what bhp could the put out?

Thanks all.

Hi John,
All the best with the bike. Main things are the soggy suspension, think one from a certain R6 helps the rear but carnt remember what year and better springs up front. Regards the motor make sure the valve clearences are spot on and get a lock up cam chain adjuster as the standard one has a habit of backing off and bending valves. If ya need o'rings for the carbs i can supply a full set.
Chris.

Hagon do shocks (and front springs) and it will need replacing, think Nitron do as well (did they go bust?). Newer GSXR model bikes rear suspension will fit, but need to grind some of the linkage off, there's really good instructions on here somewhere. If your going to tune it, speak to Jay (gsxr400racer) or Daz (stripes). Jay can supply a big bore kit, but with the crappy economy, the price has increased a lot. If it's just for trackdays, certain flatslide carbs will fit (again Jay).
This is stuff that you'll want to do if you get into inters or fast groups. But for now (i'm guessing your a novice) Fresh oil, decent chain adjusted correctly, newish round tyres (squared off ones don't work, trust me). Check your discs/pads front and rear, tyre pressures to 30psi front and rear. Oh and if your clutch goes, before you start taking the clutch apart, on the sproket cover there's a rubber cover, prise that off and check that the little nut hasn't come off/loose...i've never taken the whole bike apart only to find that was it
Anywho, what trackday you doing, who with and when... I'll come and give moral support. And be prepared to become addicted!

The bike came with a Gsxr 600 K3 rear shock, SP forks, braided lines and prolite disks. I have done quite a few track days on a Mille and R6 but I'm not familiar with the baby Gsxr. There does not seem to be much info about these bikes online (apart from this site).

My main concern is reliability and problematic issues. I have done a wet Brands evening and it ran ok, however It's not running well now (sitting outside in the winter would not help). Its going into a local shop for carb cleaning/balancing/new O rings and a few runs on the dyno to set up.

I'm not after big bhp but just wanted to know if there is a quick/cheap option. Big bore sounds good, what Bhp would it produce??

Me and Joe from the site will be doing a few this year. We are looking at either Brands, Rockingham or Cadwell in March.

Sounds like your at a good point with the bike. Ive got a big bore and flat slides on mine and your looking at £1000 without touching anything else so big money when you think how many tyres this will buy you. Get them valve clearences spot on mate and lock the cam adjuster as they throw their dummies is you miss a gear! Dont know how you are running the air box but you can run a K&N. Other free stuff is slot the pick up sensor mount to give a little more advance (not proven to give more power) and clean those horrible welds up that are inside the exhausts at the exhaust port exit (not proven to give more power) Its free tho! After that it all gets serious with head skims, blue printing and balancing, etc. Id run it as is and after a few outings you can draw up a plan regarding any weak points.

PM'd my email Chris.

Chris - I have sent the funds. I do have a question about the flatside carbs. What ones fit and are they a straight swap and is it worth it??

I think I will stay clear of the big bore as its a bit too pricy for me. Does it make a good improvement?

Thanks for all the useful info. Its all been added to my list for the local garage.

Got the big bore on my Bandit400V road bike and it gave me about 8bhp. Ive got flaties on my track bike that is on standard bores and they give a much stonger mid to top but are only available from Japan and go for about £500. TMR's or FCR's in 32mm /33mm in a spacing of 77-85-77 will fit straight on. I Know XJR400 will work as these are what ive got but iv been told that you can use XJR 1200/1300, ZRX NOT ZXR(down draft) 400/1100/1200, Zephyr 1100 and GPZ900R, altho most will be of a bigger bore so you would need to check that and im not 100% on these fittings.Ive seen 32mm TMR's for a GPZ on allens but have no idea what money they go for, would guess £800+.Oh, and you need a push pull throtle.

Its weird but ive just spoken to a guy in Japan with a set of 33mm TRM-MJR's that are for the GSXR and he says they are about a grand and thats second hand. :o
Im not sure of the main differences in the two, think the MJR's have like a power jet that stops them bogging or somthing like that but they are at least £300 more than the normal TMR when new so mega money.
