The pump change is more for having the 'UK' method which diverts (some) oil through the cooler and (apart from the pump itself) involves different piping internally. As long as your pump is decent and your big end clearances[1] ok you shouldn't have a problem.

I wouldn't bother with drilling the block / fitting the cooler.. your going to need new gaskets etc, it's going to cost too much.
Just go with the water cooler plate if you need one.
Or... bolt a 24 engine in there

If i think what your talking about is something that ive seen in one of the forum threads then i cant keep my fan as well, which is something i want to do. I know it may seem a bit overkill with some of the bits i have on the bike but it is going to be worked quite hard and a bit of extra oil with a cooler isnt going to do it any harm i wouldnt think.
The sandwhich plate and stubby filter sounds like what im looking for, if it fits

Howdo.. Just to advise that with the sandwich plate and std filter you cannot fit a fan at all - it all fits in but I had to dink the top of the filter to stop it touching the rads.so the short filter is essential. You might even get shorter filters that the Yamahah one, I don't know.
May get chance to nip up the garage and take some pics/measurements later on..

I don't want to add a negative tone to this thread......but I will anyway.
If you don't have some serious engine mods going on then there isn't really any point going to all the effort. And by serious mods, I'm talking heads, big bore, etc.
I run standard rads and a full HRC carb set-up (standard engine, no fan). I race at the peak of the Australian Summer (40+ degrees) and I don't have any overheating problems aside from when I slow down to pit. I haven't had any probs on a road NC30 either - they run fairly hot standard - but I can appreciate that you may want a fan for traffic.
Perhaps your circumstances warrant it, but personally I'd be spending my hard earned cash elsewhere.

Thanks superlite, your point is well made and sensible, but you know when you just get something in your head and no matter whats said you are forever trying to justify it to yourself, well for me this is one of them. I'm at a point where i cant do much else to my other bikes and ive had this in mind for the vfr for a while.
Thanks CMSMJ1, i will be very interested to hear what measurements you find to see if im likely to have the clearance for the mocal sandwhich plate, stubby filter and fan

The stubby is 52mm and the std is 70mm - or thereabouts. I reckon you will struggle to run a fan with the Mocal but there are probably slimmer sandwich plates...but I never found one

The oil rad I have is large - maybe 9-11 rows and is stamped as KTM. I'll be changing this for a smaller ad that is more in the air flow - poss under the pillion seat in a ducted flow. We'll see...
