Struggling to find any info on this, but I'm fairly sure my bike has no fuel filter. Does anybody have any experience with these aftermarket inline fuel filters.. Will it mess around with pressure in the fuel lines/carbs?
Also if anyone has any workshop manuals on the xjr400 it would be appreciated.

Do you have gravity feed carbs or fuel pump ? You can hear a pump ticking when you turn the ignition on.
If not the your fuel filter will probably be on top of the fuel tap - take the tank off and roll it on the side then unbolt the tap and clean the gauze filter.
I think the engine is like an XJ unit, have a look at the XJ600 manual

Aye; the tanks on them are conventional without a fuel pump, Boris.
An inline fuel filter will not effect gravity fed carburation until it becomes clogged and restricted.

Kayla had one of these; and jolly nice it was too.

See, I don't think it needs it and if it isn't standard I'd be loath to fit one

There is a filter on the fuel tap inside the tank, take the whole tap out to clean it.
