Number 9 - What was and what shall be

Post by CMSMJ1 » Wed Feb 16, 2011 2:53 pm

This is my NC. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My NC is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
My NC, without me, is useless. Without my NC, I am useless. I must ride my NC fast. I must ride faster than my enemy who is trying to beat me. I must beat him before he beats me.

I will...

My NC and myself know that what counts in this race is not the roads that we ride, the noise of our exhaust, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the rides that count. We will ride...

My NC is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its throttle and its brakes.
I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my NC clean and ready. We will become part of each other.

We will...

Before 400Greybike, I swear this creed. My NC and myself are the warriors of this site. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is HRC's and there is no enemy, but peace!

In the mists of time...a friend of mine had a lovely NC30.

Image

Standard in every way*. 16000kms on the clock.

*apart from the mid panels colour obviously.

This was to be my bike and so I bought it in September 2004

This will be a monty thread...please bear with me as I find all the pics and we'll see what went on with this beast...and what will become of it

So..I bought the bike in 2004..seems fucking ages ago. It lived in my back yard under cover for a couple of months as I did not even have a bike licence then! I was 26. Always wanted a bike, due to the real world, I never had chance to get one.

The lad I bought this from, Matt (or Aki) had always had bikes and as you get through this thread you;ll see he pops up a wee bit. (He buys bikes, gets bored and sells them. Me and my mates have had a few off him)

Aki had previously had an old 1WG FZR400 that was knackered and he got rid of that and bought this NC30. I used to see one back in the day parked near my mam's last house and always liked them.

The pic in the first post is at Matt's house ion Bolton when I went to have a look. I told him then that I wanted it!!

Eventually, an FZR600 came around for Matt..and so the NC30 was mine.

£1300 and it came with all docs, MOTs and the lot. Was imported to the UK in 2000 and I am the 3rd Owner.

it had 16000 km on it - so just under 1000 miles a year in it's previous life.

Matt dropped it off for me..I was stoked.

I joined the old 400 greybike forum on the 11th November 2004. :o Fuck me! that is also a long time ago..
:rocks:

And so...me and my first bike, the newly christened number 9 were to be best mates.

*Number 9 - Why?

Well, I have been a mountain biker for a long time and my first bike I owned (A shitty Carrera Maxima) was always labelled Number 1.
I built another bike to replace this one..and it was no2
Another arrived in the shape of No3 (stolen, still gutted) and so on...

By the time I have gone through so many other bikes..it happened that the 9th bike of the line had a V4 in it and so, My NC30 became no9.

ART can to replace the original one. I found the sewing machine noises a touch too quiet and of course...what do you do when you get an NC30..you chop the can off!!

Image

No9s fitted...as well as an HRC sticker ;)

I bodged the can on with some chavvy cherry bomb exhaust tubing and paste...nice.

So, the bike was cool..I was cool...I loved riding it and was going out just for the hell of it. Trying to find my way around the local roads and having fun.

6 months down the line...a fight with a dry stone wall would lead to some changes..in my head and with the bike.

Right..

Well after a period of riding about on my bike (I passed my test in November) I was beginning to think I was some kind of hardcore rider. You know the drill..rag it everywhere, get scared a fair few times and think that having sketchy moments are all part of the deal.

I went for a rideout with Aki and met him at the Snake Pass Inn on the lovely A57. We had a half of beer and chewed the fat. Then we went for another ride out. He was on his new FZR600 “Yellow Peril” and it was a fast, fairly fettled beast of a thing.

We raced and generally blasted from the pub to Glossop in super speedy time. At Glossop we went south, towards Chapel en le Frith.

We were a couple miles on the road.. and HERE I was chasing like the clappers. Note the double lines and the cat’s eyes.

I came round that (looks really shallow now!! ) corner and I drifted wide. My wheels were on the cat’s eyes and coming up the hill was a scooter and a transit behind. I was going to drift into their lane. I bricked it.

So, being the shit novice rider, I braked…..and the bike was picked up, shot across the lane, clipping the scooter guy as our jackets brushed against each other and I rammed the dry stone wall at a shallow angle.

This wall took the brunt of ym crash. I railed down the wall, knocking the stones off it with my hand, arm and legs…the bike also took a beating against the stones. My mate No9 was not impressed....

When I stopped banging into the wall I fell into the road on the left side of the bike too..wounded! Both sides!

Scooter dude came to pick me up and the guys in the transit picked my bike up. Aki was long gone….he was riding fast and got far away before he realised I was not there...

My hand and arm was throbbing and my leg too – I was wearing a textile jacket, jeans and boots/gloves. It fucking hurt.

We wheeled the bike to the bottom of the hill and out of the way of the traffic and I said I was fine..the bike would not start but the pulsing in my right index finger was the killer..no way I was going to take my gloves off!

Soon enough, Aki came back..shocked to see me having crashed the bike and being pretty shaken up. We managed to get the bike going, cloouds of smoke and a bit of bumping and I slowly rode back following him – I was 30 miles from home and had to ride the bloody thing.

On the run down off the top of Snake pass, the right hand lowers that were cracked and hanging on by fresh air and willpower finally fell off at 40 mph. I stopped, collected them up and chucked them into a bush. (I collected them from this same place about a year later….fixed them, used them until they destroyed themselves under my back wheel as I was doing a full speed run on another ride out…)

I got home, very late. I got a bag of peas on my hand and another of my mates, Grandad, took me and the wife to the hospital and had the lovely injury of a broken tip of my index finger. nice.

Image

The poor old Number9 was not happy. Bent bars, brace, twisted forks, smashed lowers, cracked upper….bent rearsets, bent subframe, exhaust..and so on. it was quiote a fat crash and I am glad it was a dry stone wall as it moved out the way as I scraped down it. A proper wall, or armco...and yikes. That would have fucked me up properly.

I knew why I crashed – I did not have the skills to ride a bike fast. There is a reason new riders flal off and I had just had it happen to me.

I bought Twist of the Wrist 2. I decided to learn how to ride properly and vowed to always think about it more and be aware of what I was doing. The crash was totally avoidable and I would laugh in the face of the same situation now...but hindsight is a wonderful thing indeed.

So, for No9 I needed to get some new panels for the bike first and get replacements for all the bits I had broken. It was at this time that I got hold of Rick Oliver.. top dude.

Also, Tim (formerly IFTNFS of this parish and now masquerading as “thefatman” in other places.) sold me a lovely nosecone and I got some panels from him too.

So, No9 now looked like this

Still running standard carbs and so on. Now with added alloy bars, screen brace and that is it.

Soon…we would have the first trackday!
