oi!
I hope to get to some of the meets this year. Stunning work on your bike btw, I've looked at your thread a few times.

Re: Lam's bikes
cheers dude, the only thing thats going to let it the hardwork down is my winter ride to northwales next weekend and the crappy chinese fairings i ahvent replaced yet, but importantly ive sorted the mechanics etc out first rather than the cosmetics so to speak.laminator wrote:oi!

Re: Lam's bikes
Update in the YB7 to keep things upto date. Due to the age of the bike a fuel hose split under the tank. Off with the fairing unit, all of the tank cover and seat unit is one piece. Removed the tank and found this -
I replaced all of the fuel hoses. Refitted the tank but it wouldn't fire. I pulled the hose off the carbs from the fuel pump then switched on the ignition. The pump started working and fuel flowed into a bottle at a reasonable rate. Connected the hose back onto the carbs and switched the ignition on again. The pump ticked for a while then stopped, as I expected, when it got to pressure.
I then removed the airbox to have a look into the carbs, etc. Nothing seems wrong from first inspections. Choke and throttle operating correctly. Although saying this I don't have much experience with bike carbs.
I managed to get a plug out. It seemed in OK condition but appeared wet (it does mean that fuels getting there). This was not as easy as it sounds.
I checked the spark and there is one, but didn't seem too strong.
I went out to get some easy start and try that, squirted it in the carbs, and it started. I went for a run on it with no problems, I've tried to start it again since and I can't get it to fire unless it has a squirt of easy start to get it going.
I've ordered some new plugs and am now waiting for them to arrive.

Re: Lam's bikes
Cheers, it's an old and in the process of restoring Lambo Espada (I seem to like Italian stuff). The rear, that's perched on the frame, is for panels to replace some on the original car. The engines rebuilt and back in the car and it's sitting on four wheels for the first time in many years. Mainly interior and body then it's done.CRM wrote:Welcome - they look great. may i ask whats lurking under the cover with 4 wheels ?

Re: Lam's bikes
Today didn't really go to plan as I didn't manage to get on my bike until this afternoon. The YB7 is still having problems starting, but the plugs have not arrived yet. I did have the tank off and fix the reserve solenoid wiring. I also found out why the temp gauge on the YB4 had stopped working, the cable had come off the sender. While I had the fairing off I notice a small oil leak on the cam sensor, so I fixed that aswell.
I made a little video of the bikes while I'd got them all out. :)

Re: Lam's bikes
The plugs have arrived for the YB7, but I haven't fitted them yet. I've also bought a compression tester, as EvilChick suggested, and plan on checking the compression while I'm doing the plugs.
I bought a carb balancer this week and today I tried it. 3 & 4 were very low, so I adjusted the balancing screw and they came inline with 1 & 2. I tried to find out what reading I should expect on the carb balancer but couldn't find a figure anywhere.
I also bought a throttle cable for the FZR, I'm fitting it tomorrow.
I went for a ride today and got my old man to come along so we could take both Bims out.

Re: Lam's bikes
I replaced the throttle cable, on the FZR, a few weeks ago and it's much better than before. While I'd got the airbox off I noticed the rubbers were sh*gged. Two of them had been cut down and only rested on the top of the carbs
Also noticed that one of the EXUP cables had broke. I cleaned the servo and blasted the bolts ready for the new cables. I also checked for movement/seized exhaust valve, all seems OK.
Before
After
One of my mates doesn't have a bike at present so I've insured him on the FZR. We went for a ride out last sunday and had loads of laughs. He used to ride an Aprilia RSV mille with loads of torque. He pulled out to overtake and slowly started accelerating. He dropped it down a gear and accelerated a 'bit' faster. Then he went down another gear and got a move on. I was laughing for miles thinking of him swearing to himself. He really enjoyed the spin on the FZR though.
The new rubbers arrived so I put them on. You can see one of the two cut down rubbers next to the new one. I replaced all four.
I haven't taken it out for a run yet, but plan on getting it out tomorrow. I also checked the carbs are balanced after the new rubbers were fitted.
I took the YB7 over to Donington today, to see some 400GB members at the trackday. I pushed the starter, after not touching it for a week, and she started! I also went over in the afternoon on the YB4.

Re: Lam's bikes
The YB7 starting problem wasn't fixed. The next time I tried to start it she wouldn't fire.
I decided it was time to look at the carbs. I'd got all the parts I needed to do all the jobs I want to do, while the fairing is off. (Oil, filter, plugs, etc.) I removed all the fairings, swapped plugs and filter, and gave her some new oil. I adjusted the EXUP cables, while I could get to the valve. The carbs came off, stripped, cleaned, and replaced (also adjusted the choke cable so it actually works)
The exhaust rattle at tickover has now gone, and....... she's starting first push of the button without having to use the choke. Result!
Clothes off, jobs done, ready for the fairings.
Front wheel off, hanging from the forklilft.
Front fairing back on and wheel back in.
FZR400 - I made some new EXUP cables myself. Turned some end fittings, drilled, then tigged them onto some 19 strand 1.6mm stainless wire (using the old outers and adjusters). The EXUP valve was stiff so copper grease came out.
All back together. I also bought and fitted some new rear indicators as the RHS rear was cracked (I bought a pair because I don't like to see odd lights on the back)
There's always a ying to a yang / Dark side to the force / etc.
The FZR had different keys for the ignition and petrol cap. Coming back from Manchester I filled up in Leek. When I got home the petrol cap key had fallen off the keyring. I had to drill the lock so I can fill it up. Now looking for a matching lockset so I can use one key for all (which is something I wanted to do anyway)
