That black stuff could be bits from a degrading filter. Not the air filter but the small ones in little round canisters that are sometimes put on carbs to filter the air above the diaphragms.

Buy some brake/carb cleaner and spray it around the inlet manifolds/carb join/cyl head join to see if the engine picks up. Easiest way to check for an air leak, which will make it run lumpy.
I balanced mine with the el cheapo blue metal economy gauges, and they were good enough.
Once you get it right, it stays sweet for ages.

Image anyone able to help me out snapped a fairing bolt in here but can't find the part number in the manuals to find the bolts info! bloody annoyed as I have no idea if I can replace it

Centre punch and drill the snapped thread out carefully

thanks had a look on ebay thankfully someone had a set for sale so snapped them up
