Advice on 1987 gsxr400 gk71f

Hello
I have recently bought a 1987 gsxr400 with the square headlight. It needs a few bits on it but the bike is basically complete.
We are struggling to free the clutch. The bikes goes into and out of gear and the clutch lever moves freely but when in gear if you pull the clutch it doesn't engage.
We are trying to turn the bike over which is also seems reluctant to do
