I quite like the French headlight, even though it looks a bit odd.

Didn't know that it is French. Googled like hell to find info ...
Although, it stands out from the crowd ;)

Any info why they had to use the rectengular headlights?

its not necesarily french, its a non-UK L1 model (the first after they switched from the 1989-1990 H-models).

...although it looks like you have the UK light cutout in the front fairing, and someone has fiberglassed over it as you can see the edge of where the UK (and later spec) headlight shape goes.

or it might be that ALL L-models had the same cutout, and the factory made up the couple of hundred necessary for non-UK markets, and modified them to spec?

Did all the other European ZXR's use that light? I just remember seeing one at the bike show in 1990 and being struck by it's odd looks; this was before they'd released pics of the UK bike btw. There was also another bike on display with an strange headlight arrangement, might've been an Aprilia Futura?

I found "Motorrad" issue 21 from 28th of September 1991 in my archive.
They did a comparison of VFR400r and ZXR400.

They had the "first official imported" ZXR400 and it had exactly the same headlight as mine.

But it had the small rear spoiler for pillion that I have not. :?:
I have VIN ZXR400L-000254, L1 started with ZXR400L0001 up to ZX400L-009001

(source : http://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Kawasaki ... _(L_Model))

Looks like I have a grey one w/o the (mandatory) pillion handle for the German market?!
