impulse buy -- not too bad :)
picked this up last night
pretty isnt it ?
proper sized pic here http://socrates.is-a-geek.net/blackh1/PICT0012-3.jpg
got it home and took it apart to see whats what.
the good :
pretty
modified exhaust with baffled link pipe removed, sounds ace, works well
pretty
pulls well
pretty
very smooth
pretty
everything works
pretty
heated grips
pretty
new air filter
the bad
splits in seats
cracked screen
clutch is fubar, slips like mad
idle set way rich, have to bumpstart it when hot
air leak at inlet stubs
airbox badly mounted with bellmouths all twisted up
fork seal knackered
lefthand rearset has been snapped and welded back up
wank tyres (plenty of tread, just crap, and mismatched)
chain and sprockets almost completely shagged
rear shock has no damping whatsoever
brakes wooden, skanky looking lines
and errm , .. yeh, it runs hot and pisses coolant all over the floor at every possible opportunity.
so that'll be the head gasket then !!
never mind, gives me a chance to get the dremel out while the heads off :)
carbs and airbox already done
im sure ive got some clutch plates in the garage
ive got an L shock somewhere
have an un-used o-ring chain somewhere, a new 14 tooth front and 2 rear sprockets (45)
got a stack of part worn 090 fronts
so just need,
head-gasket ~ £15
brake lines ~ £50
rear tyre ~100
oil filter ~£6
fork seals ~£ ??
MOT
Tax
plan is to run around on it for a few weeks while i finish the other one, then its time for the trackday fairing :)
hopefully have it done in a couple of days as my car is falling apart and i need transport
speed project !! lol

lol, i'll bet you a pint and a curry it cost more though !
but yeh, it is pretty, and the paint is a very subtle metalflake/metallic which doesn't show in the pic.
talking of impulse buying ... that exhaust system just turned up :) the can is probably halfway between what i initially thought, and then what i hoped .. but serviceable, and def stubby-able.

Re: impulse buying is BAD!!
paid £830 for it figuring that everything wrong i can fix cheap, and im so "un-central" here that getting round the country to look at 3-4 bikes would cost me 2-3 hundred quid anyway and the random factor of it living less than 50 yards from where i used to live .. was just too random to ignore
very happy with the exhaust mate .. can came up ok after 10 minutes of abuse with a big stick and a mallet.

Re: impulse buying is BAD!!
well, my spangly new ride has revealed some horrid bodges after being pulled apart ..
mainly that the monkey that last assembled the engine has not bothered to seat the block on on the dowels correctly, just seems to have plopped it into place and err .. torqued it up, mashing one of the dowels into the bottom of the block ..
still, it'll get fixed .. and the rings/piston/bores/head all seem to be in fine fettle..
the shock has been replaced with the L1 shock + the H spring (for no reason other than its red and shiny)
got some new crash bungs on order, as the ones fitted had been err .. crashed on .. (very very bent bolts)
the exhaust has been chemically cleaned and give several coats of VHT paint which i did my best to cure with a blowtorch ..
bit of luck i'll get the sodding thing running tomorrow as Emma's bike is finally .. almost roadworthy again :)

Re: impulse buying is BAD!!
hurrah !! the engine is back together, but i appear to have lost my small torque wrench while moving house .. so have um, guessed at the torque for the head bolts using .. um .. feel ! (should be ok, i didnt have a torque wrench the first time i built a zxr engine, and that still going strong in Emma's bike)
just hope it fires up cleanly and holds together now.. but its far too late and the exhaust far too loud to find out till tomorrow.
