2007 r6 Shock - how do you take the spring off?

Post by uniquefzrfreak » Wed Jul 30, 2008 8:12 pm

I've purchased an r6 2007 shock to do the usual mod on my 3en2 FZR400. The shock is in good condition, but the spring has had brake fluid spilt on it, so I want to remove it and have it re-coated.

I've bought some spring compressors that clip on either side of the spring and you just tighten the nut to compress the spring, but I'm not sure what to do next.

I'm assuming that it's the fork end (opposite end to the reservoir) that comes off some how.

Any instructions, diagrams or tips would be appreciated.

If your taking the spring off why not get a lighter weight one. As far as the 3TJ goes the best setting is on the lowest ... I'm not sure what spring you actually need but it would be better nearer the middle allowing you more effective adjustment.
Talk to a suspension specialist like Maxton

Most shocks if I remember correctly, have at the bottom of the spring something that looks like a ring but it's actually in two halves. if you compress the spring enough, the halves pull out ( or lift up and pull out )and the spring should drop off the bottom.
The spring on the R6 shock I fitted to my 3tj was mint when I got that but after messing about with it lifting it in and out while modding it to fit, it ended up full of marks, so after you going to all this trouble to make it look right, it may be worth before you fit it, wrapping something round it that could be ripped off once in place. Good luck :)

I have just checked my R6 shock and on that the ring at the bottom is one piece but it has a slot in it. Once the spring is compressed, lift it up and slide it out over the chrome ram/bar.

Thanks very much, all. - Again!

Job done. Here's some pics to help finish the thread off for the next bloke looking for the same answer.

Ok, I have no idea how to upload images, so I've stuck them on my web space, here's the links:

http://www.derbyshirebikers.co.uk/IMG_3339.JPG" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.derbyshirebikers.co.uk/IMG_3340.JPG" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If anyone knows hot to embed those images in this thread in case I ever loose the web space, then please go ahead.

If it doesn't fit my FZR, here's another use for it!

If you used the spring instead of the compresser you'd look like Zebedee !!!

I don't think I'm Zebedee......

I am Zebedee! - Boing...., oh, bollocks - binned it again.

Maybe I could streetfight a Darth Vader helmet into some kind of dodgy Triumph nose cone style hat! I'd look like a cross breed between a dark woody wood-pecker and Zebedee?

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have opened that last can of beer. Sorry.
