FZR 400 piston

Post by Mitsostrompas » Sun May 15, 2016 11:58 pm

Hi I have found a set of 3 piston that looks to be very good condition.
I can see that these pistons is a little bit different from my bike (I have an 1WG 88')

I contact the seller and he told me that is from the FZR 400 SP 2tk model,
and the pistons are a little lighter from my, and with more compression because are from the sp model,
but I must to buy one more to use 4 of them.

Here is the link:

I can use these pistons to my bike?
Thanks,
Mitsos

Those pistons could be slightly taller ( from piston pin to crown) or have smaller valve cut aways. You will need the check the cylinder deck height and the piston to valve clearance before using those pistons in a non sp engine. It's quite a tricky job to measure them properly and if you get it wrong BOOM!
It will possibly need to be run on super unleaded fuel as well to prevent detonation.
Probably not worth the hassle.

Also you have to ask what happened to the 4th piston?
Usually the engine has blown up so do you really want the surviving 3 in yours?

Hi dobbslc,
I speak with the seller and he told me that he sold the 4th piston saparate because he had a good offer.
He send me photos with all the 4 pitons before he sell the one and all looks good.
Also in the photos that he has now the pistons looks perfect, and I was thinking just to buy one new
from Yamaha to make a complete set for my engine.
The matter is that my bike is like this:

And the pistons from this model:

I want to know the difference in this 2 engines. I can see that the piston are difference.
It's any difference in the cylinder hights or in the cylinderhead? or just a cylinder head gasket?
If I know that I believe that I will not need to check the cylinder deck height and the piston to valve clearance.
Many thanks

Which model 400 do you have and what do you want to use the bike for once the engine is rebuilt ???
The link to the pictures on your post don't work ... hi the [img] button and paste the link in the middle.

Buying these pistons isn't a good idea, they're hard to find and a third one to make up the set may / may not match the weight of the others. Either buy a set of 4 or look for another engine

You will never find a matching piston at a sensible price.

I am thinking to buy the 4th new from Yamaha dealler.
I can not afford to buy 4 new, and I don't want to use chinese pistons....
The matter is what are the differnce between the 88 1WG and the 88 SP 2TK models.
For the moment I have see that they have different pistons, gearbox (the sp has close ratio),
and rear shock. Is any other different in the engine?

The SP generally have lighter valve train, they also used different carbs, a smoothbore design.

Listen to what we're tell you - even if a three pistons were similar to your engine they might not match your barrels and you don't know if the rings are ok either way a rebuild for an engine can be 200 + (based on a gasket set, skimming the head and doing the valve tolerances, then a set of plugs, oil and filters. Find a different engine, if you cant get a 400 3en then look at a 600 3he.

The SP 2TK piston in any size has been NLA for many ,many years.

The only chance to find one is in an old shop that has no internet savvy.
All the others were snatched up years ago.

That's why the bloke paid your seller over the odds for one piston.
