3TJ Parts

Post by petrolhead » Tue Feb 25, 2014 12:50 am

Why is it so hard to find 3TJ parts ..
Are spares hard to get on account of them been Imports or is it because of age..
I have bough a second 3TJ for spares and it come's with a engine which needs a Con rod and Barrel..
I have a spare set of barrels which solves the barrel problem but the other bottom end I have is not a 3TJ i think .
It had 1wg on the barrels so figure different model than the 3tj..
And from what I figure the pistons and con rods probaly wont fit.
Is it hard to get 3tj con rods and pistons or is there anything else the same or will fit ..
I would really love to get the bits as then it means I have a spare engine also..

All fzr400's have 1WG on the cases so your bottom end could be a 3TJ

3TJs were officially imported as the 4DX but they were expensive, much more than the FZR600 of the day and getting on for the 1000 so they weren't popular with the public. No demand means fewer spare parts.

Why not swap the conrods and pistons as a set and look for any marks on them for a clue

Checked the pistons and Rods from the other bottom end I have
Piston stamped with 1WG on one side the other side says 3 izumi
Conrod stamped with 1WG H* on one side the letter Y on the other

After many a hour of wondering if the bottom end is that of a 3TJ or not came to a end with a simple look at the motor..
The oil filter was the thing that solved the problem ,, It is not the screw in filter its the cartridge one..
So it was the older 1wg bottom end 1 wg barrels and a 3tj head that was on the bike..

Curious now is it a straight forward head swap if I was to put a 3tj head on another FZR400 motor .
As long as the Barrels of the and bottom end were the same would the 3tj head be a straight forward swap..

Probably - But that's about as much as I can tell you.
Technically it would depend on the head vollume which would affect compression, you could of course skim the barrels to reinstate that if needs be

Does this mean that the 3TJ head can be swapped for an earlier head if needed - or is machining involved?

Have you got any pics?

Don't know.
If the internals are the same ... that would mean the volume of each cylinder in the head - otherwise it will alter the compression ratio. The height of the valves and their stroke which is governed by the camshafts - otherwise they might touch the pistons.
Probably the biggest difference would be the 3TJ head has a frame mounting point on each side

ah I forget about the mounting points!

Who's got a (good) reputation or specialist knowledge for FZR engine work?

Are you looking for a 3TJ head ... or repair a damaged one ?

not sure yet, after being busy with loads of other stuff during the best months of the year Im trying to find time to get back to addressing the FZR's running issue. Which makes me wonder who is worth knowing if it needs head work?

I know the 600 route is an attractive option but I dont want to go down that route, yet...
