Haha.............

The decoke and skim sound like a plan. You just getting them flat or going for a couple a tenths to up the compression a bit?

Nah, just flat. It's a roadbike the last thing I want to do is get involved with tighter tolerances.
The cases are away for welding and I've bought a valve spring compressor

So after a couple of false starts I got around to cleaning up the head. I bought a nice valve spring compressor - it was to big for the valves, so I bought a cheap one instead. I got some freezer bags at the local shop for a quid, drew up a diagram and made some labels. All the valves came out and I got the dremmel out to clean up head, then the valves as they got put back. I also ground them in. The head needs to be washed with some petrol to get as much dust off it as I can before refitting, but it's ok for now.

Aren't collets a pain ???
I rang up the garage and the cases are welded so I'll sort some time and collect them.

Did you use a dab of grease on the valve stem and surgical forceps to handle the collets Boris. ?

A dab of grease on the valve and a small flat blade screwdriver also with some grease on to place them.
I dropped three of them, one popped out when I was compressing a spring, one stuck to a spring when I put it back, and the last I just dropped.

Things have moved on in the last week or so. I got a new cam chain and the cases came back from being welded.

I laid up the crank to check the clearance from the welds to the flywheel, then practice fitted the lower case, the chain follower needed a bit of guidance. I applied Three Bond with a razor blade to keep it thin - but I forgot the cam chain so had to take it apart clean it all and do it again.

I did remember the oil control though
