tyre choices and fitment

Post by CMSMJ1 » Tue Jul 08, 2008 3:21 pm

Howdo all..

As I have lots of 120/60/17 and 150/60/18 tyres left over from my NC30 spares I want to use them up on my t/cat powered 3en1 trackbike. I also have a 120/70/17 as well (all BT090 for track use)

I have a set of wets on wheels that are 120/60/17 and 150/60/18 already that I bought from Si of MadSi fame.

The std profiles are 110/70 and 140/70 I think? I would imagine the tyres will squeeze on the rims but can anyone advise if this is a good call or not?

I am not a tart who thinks that you need the widest tyres becuase they look good...I need the function first and the good looks afterwards (just like me in fact.. ;) )

The wheels I have available to me are a pair of 3 inch fronts - 1 from a 600 3HE with a BT92 and another from Si that is from an unknown 400 - whatever Si useed to race/trackday I would assume as it has the front wet on it.

I have 3 rears - 1 is a 3.5 inch wide std from the 3he with a BT92 on it and the other 2 are from 400's and both 18 inch dia and 4 inch width. One of these has the 150/60 wet on it.

Any advice is welcome guys - the 600 is going to be used for the later part of the summer and then when I have accrued enough bits the 3en1 will be built to a rolling chassis and the engine swap take place.

cheers :)

Madsi had a 1WG SP which should run the same width tyres as the 3en1 as standard, so I'd guess he was running these sizes due to availability of track tyres.

As you know what your doing on a bike I'd say you'll be ok but take it steady first

OK - thanks mate for your reply.

I would guess that with Madsi being well clued up on his bikes that his handled pretty good with the oversized rubber fitted.

I will give it a whirl and see how it feels - if the profile looks out then I am going to have to find a 3.5 and 4.5 inch set of rims which will probably be cheaper than buying more tyres ;)

Do any of the racing FZR guys use the 120 and 150 section tyres? I'll gues that most go for the rear 3TJ wheel for a 160 but there will be some guys racing 18 inch /4 wide rims out there? If so...what tyres do you run?

The trackbike I am building will be a pukka setup (for me) and I want to suck in the knowledge on these FZR motos like I have with the mighty V4... :ugeek:

I think the dunlop alpha 10's are what most people would recommend on the 18" wheel, though me race bike has had the 3tj conversion!

i have a couple of 18" rims one painted the other mostly stripped if you need some spares! :D
