FZR400RR hybrid wider rear wheel question...

Post by fach3003 » Sun Oct 14, 2018 3:27 pm

Hi to all.hopefully someone maybe able to help...
.i am getting back into FZR400RRs again after a 12-13 year break.
I used to be on here but lost my details. Anyhow decided to become a member again!

I have lost count the number of 3TJs ive had since the early 2000s..
many i wish i hadn't sold : (((
Especially my Road J1 SP and a Hybrid i build which was fairly special..

Anyhow...built another 3TJ Hybrid to race next season on my UK return.
Its pretty much ready...but i just wonder if all these years later
any one out there has managed to put a bigger modern 5.5 rear wheel in.

one of our bike had a 5.25 or 5 inch dymag...cant remember and ive
seen 600 foxeye 5 inch wheels done...as well as F3 CBR600 honda wheels.
probably anothers...
I read an old thread on a zxr400 forum..a guy there was using zx6r wheels
in the old zxr400s...and said he had just finished putting a R6 wheel in a 3TJ...
and it was a real fight but managed it...this was 10 years ago.

been loads of new bikes / yamahas since then..R6s MT07 etc...

Anyone managed to squeeze a modern OEM 5.5 rear wheel into a 3TJ...

Currently mine has the usual 4.5 rim with 160 rear...of course a 150 is better for that size rim...
But we have always used a 160 with the hybrids..but a 180 like modern stuff would be a dream!

Can anyone help ??? Kind regards to all :rocks: :rocks:

I guess if you'll get about 100hp, maybe a bit more with some engine mods. Is that is enough to warrant a 180 rear ? I'd say look to put a 5" with a 160 that will get you a bigger contact patch because the tyre isn't pinched up onto a 4.5" wheel which should give you more grip. You'll need to raise the tail to compensate for the height loss from the tyre.

Thanks for the advice...
were running close to 100 at the wheel with a lovely curve...
i think we will end up with a 5inch wheel as you mentioned for the same reasons.
I'd post a few pictures on here but cant work out how to attach them...
Again Thanks : )))))

I'm running a 5.25" dymag in an almost standard 3TJ swing arm. I can run a 180/55 tyre without issue but I prefer the 180/60 (which measures closer to 190 than 180 wide on a 5.5" or 6" rim). To fit this I have to run the wheel towards the back of the swing arm and clearance is tight. The chain needs offsetting to the left a bit, but that helps line up with the front sprocket on the Thundercat motor.

I have a completely stock 3TJ swingarm and it doesn't really accommodate the 180/60. The one I use is polished and has all of the welds polished down which provides about 3mm more clearance. I've raced this wheel set up it umpteen times with an 83bhp 3TJ timebomb of a motor without any issue. Assuming the photos work you can just about see I only have about 2mm clearance on the right and pushing the sprocket across on the left gives about 3mm clearance between sprocket studs and the swing arm. I make sure the wheel goes in straight and it's properly tightened!

The idea is to run it in BEMSEE Thunderbike Sport but it's now shat its gearbox and I'm trying to find a better replacement that the original chocolate items that Yamaha provide.

Thanks for the photo advice  i will give it a whirl later....
i aint very good with computers being a thick Geordie!

Also a huge thanks for the advice and photos on your race 3TJ....Man that is tight...
But obviously works...wow....and shows what can be done...
83hp thats alot of power from a 400...i bet thats special inside..

our bikes around 2002-2005 era were giving 76-78hp on our dyno...best ZXR4 ever was 72 : )

We had dymags in the past on one of the bikes...
of course i was the younger team mate at the time! and ran stock wheels..
My teamates bike had dymags BDK Alloy Yokes/ subframes and race Rad..
His bike was 11kg less than my bike..but then again i was over 11kg lighter than him : )

spend a fortune already ( for me! ) to get where the bike stands..
So don't have the budget for a pair of new dymags...maybe this winter we will try something different!

Roll on next race season...be my first race for a long long time!

Thanks to everyone again...
