Can i replace CB1 cdi with CBR400RR racing cdi unit ?

Post by podmanvn » Mon Feb 20, 2017 9:57 am

Hi everyone,
I m new here, i have a CB1 model 1990. My CDI unit have some problem with rpm output (dead rpm line), so that i searched around ebay then found some racing CDI units: a superchips CDI unit (with UK flag) and EK2 HRC cdi.
Both of it from CBR400RR 1991.
I know that my CB1 and CBR400RR have same machine type (NC27 vs NC29)

When i plug they on my CB1, EK2 doesn't work, but Superchips CDI works. However, the bike have a limit sound when reaching 5000rpm.

Can u help me about this problem ? Or can u send me a CDI's diagram of them ?

Thank for help :)

I'm not overly familiar with the cbr400s but I know with the VFRs if you remove the speedometer the bike cuts the revs to 5000rpm, maybe with the superchips cdi it's something similar.
It's not having what you want but wanting what you've got....Loud ,Proud and Modified ....

Not sure about the NC29 but I do know that you can't fit an NC23 CDI on a CB-1. The CB-1 has 1 pick up in the left hand engine cover but the NC23 has 2 pick-ups so the signal generated will be different.
I do have a spare CB-1 CDI if you need it or you can fit the NC29 engine cover to give the correct type of pick ups.

Can someone give me the instruction/manual for these CDI's Pins ? They have 16 pins connected, i think they have some different connections.

My CB1 still have speedo metter connected sothat i don't think that caused problem to rev 5000 :|

I found this instruction, but don't know what is it used for ? Can u help me ?

That mod is to disable the speed restrictor standard on Japanese registered bikes. It fools the CDI unit into thinking that the maximum preset speed isn't exceeded.

I'm not sure that's your problem however unless there is a constant signal from the speedo telling the CDI that you're exceeding that limit.

I'm replace original speedo with Daytona digiatal speedo which read from "digital eye magnet" place on front disc.
Maybe that cause problem.

Because of that, i need a map of connected PINs on this CBR400RR CDI. Could u help me ?

Does sound like the limiter is your problem.

There is an orange wire with blue stripe in your cdi plug. It needs to see +12v for the bike not to limp. So get 12v from anywhere else and feed it in. Done!
