1990 NC29 Front Wheel Spindle
Hi all,
I'm trying to fit the front wheel spindle up till the notch or slit it has as pictured below, however I've been hammering it for quite some while now and the last few millimeters won't budge in. Anyone know what I can do to push it the last few millimeters I need? Thanks in advance

Have you tried tightening the bolt up on the other side to see if it pulls it in? I don't think mine sits as far in as you are trying to make yours fit

Is the bearing seated in the wheel properly on that side? Try tightening everything up as you would and then do it again , it might help line every up.

Okay so the CBR400's have whats called a floating wheel axle what you need to do is stop hammering it right now and hope to god you haven't damaged anything
what is happening when your hammering in the spindle is you are forcing the lower part of the fork into a V shape where the lower part is closer together than the top part (the bit in the lower triple clamp) this will cause the forks to bind and not work properly
what you need to do is push the wheel spindle through GENTLY until it seats into place if you look between the fork leg and the wheel spacer the spindle should be making contact with the spacer if not and you need to hammer it into place then you need to pull it back out and clean it check it for burs and clean/de-grease the axle casting in the fork leg this part needs to slide freely by hand if it doesn't then you need to rectify it and repeat the above steps until it does if the spindle is badly damaged or badly bured you will need to replace it
Now assuming the spindle can move freely you need to seat it GENTLY (there's that word again) tighten the pinch bolts on the right hand fork leg (as your looking at the bike from the front) to the correct torque, now for the fun bit you need to tighten down the left fork leg pinch bolts, once they are tight you need to LOOSEN off the right leg pinch bolts! this may sound strange but the larger diameter part of the spindle is the floating part what you need to do now is let the forks settle and find there correct position, to do this grab hold of the bars and without holding the front brake just gently bounce the front end (its very important you don't hold the front brake here) what that will do is allow the forks to settle and find their own natural position, then tighten up the pinch bolts on the right leg and your done *important just raise the front wheel and check the wheel for free play if you have any then the spindle is not seated correctly if not then your good to go
