Running on 3.

Post by Foxy400 » Mon Feb 15, 2021 9:28 pm

Got the NC35 out this morning after more than a month of enforced idleness. It started after a couple of attempts but was running rough. Without the choke it struggled but after a few more minutes it idled, although still didn't sound right.
I checked the headers and the pipe from cylinder 2 (front left) was barely warm, obviously it was running on 3.

So how do I proceed from here? What do I check first (and second etc)?

Easiest options first, is the plug lead on that cylinder, is there a spark from the lead when you crank it over, is the spark plug ok.

Fresh fuel and drain carbies. If no improvement remove carbies and clean.

Sure is. Yep, I need to get it sorted. If I didn't have the NC29 (and the Bonneville) to play with I'd have been on it by now. Thanks for the suggestions.

Finally got round to this job. The Haynes tells me to remove the right hand side panel to access the plugs. All well and good except my bike is currently wearing the Tyga bodywork. The side panels and headlight section are all one-piece. That means mirrors and air ducts off, indicators disconnected and the whole front manoeuvered forwards, lifting it out of the lower section at the same time. It's a real pain..and getting it back together is worse. So guess what..I'm putting it off until the weekend

I wouldn't bother with the plug foxy(although I know these are finicky with them)I'd be more inclined to think it would be carb related as it's been standing...I'd take tank and airbox lid off and spray a bit of carb cleaner in the front jets/mouth of carb and tap the float bowl incase it's the float valve sticking...other 3 plugs are fine so doubt 1 would just go(although possible)..but I'd say carb is the problem..good luck
