1994 NC35 Build Project

Post by ArizonaRVF » Mon Apr 22, 2019 8:41 pm

Just wanted to post up a link to my little project RVF. I'm not a "supporter" here and didn't feel like putting the effort into becoming one. Populating one thread with info is enough, lol.

Have had wrenches on it since the first week of March and I've made some decent progress so far.

Feel free to let me know what you think, what ya like, what ya don't like, anything at all. It's all fair game.

Is this the bike before you made all the changes (https://vfrworld.com/threads/1994-rvf40 ... ost-597422)? I ask as it looks in really really nice shape and at 25000km, barely broken in for a V4. Is it a new bike to you? Or have you been riding it for a while? I guess I'm just surprised given all the changes you're making (blasting, powdercoating, bodywork repainting plus all the changed components) that you didn't start with something that was in worse cosmetic shape. I'd be honored to own the bike in it's stock form.

Those pictures are quite deceiving. That is a close up of the cheap Ebay fairings that didn't fit, provided by the importer I bought it from. The bike wasn't in very good condition, even though I paid a lot of money for it, and they promised me it would be a 10 out of 10. It ended up being more like a 2 out of 10

If you can't buy what you want, build it. These are 25 year old machines, and very few of them are in "great" condition when you really get down and take a good close look at them. People selling them say they are in great condition, but I looked around enough to know that isn't telling the whole story. This will end up being a brand new 1994 RVF upgraded to 21st century components, except for the engine internals, but I'll get to that later. Not many zero mile RVF400's out there, and certainly not in the USA.

This is a more truthful and accurate representation

Who was the importer? Did the bike come from the BDS/JBA auctions? I ask as usually they have decent pics, enough to spot ill fitment like that.

A lot of the 94's showing up at BDS lately have RT bodywork, often in pretty nice shape. I saw this 1994 bike at auction recently that had RT bodywork, not Tyga but didn't have the Force V4 logos on the side.

No matter how good you might think the pictures look, it won't be representative of what the condition truly is. I won't name the importer, not worth it. My only advice is, if you can't lay eyes on it, you have to be able to accept the risk.

It sounds like you bought from a US based importer who buy in bulk from the BDS auctions and ship bikes into the US by the container. From what I've heard they're more interested in filling the container quickly than being patient and picking the best bikes. I'm not sure I'd rate that bike 2/10 but telling you the bike would be 10/10 is pretty shameful.

I'm not sure how you would determine whether it was a 2 out of 10, or a 10 out of 10, just by looking at pictures.

I mainly bought for the title. No fussing around with that, came with all the paperwork completed and a US title. Only took a 1/2 hour to have a new title in my name with a plate and registration. I knew what I was up against, I already had 90% of the parts on the shelf. I have been lurking here since last year and I've noticed quite a few posts from you asking questions concerning importing. I take it you still haven't been able to find one?

Dunno how to answer this other than to say that I figure most people could differentiate between 2/10 and 10/10. Between 5/10 and 7/10, based just on pictures, harder.

I'm self-importing. I've got all the details sorted out to my satisfaction (state and federal). Just waiting for the right bike to show up. There are no shortage of bikes. Generally I find if I'm patient I end up doing ok.

If you want a mint bike your best bet is dropping £5500-6000 in the UK. They were greyed there from new, get a bike with one or two owners, known history, stored in a real garage rather than outside under a bike cover.

I checked into the "self importing" and in 2019 it made it a little easier for a 1994, 2020 will make it a little easier for a 1995, and so on, and so on...the thing is, I bought mine in 2018. The research I did, wasn't worth my time to screw around with it. I'm not a big fan of running around in bureaucratic circles. I wish you the best of luck, without a person on the ground, it's a tough deal.
