RVF 400 Electrical Problem 1994

Post by nightowl11 » Sun Jul 29, 2018 8:14 am

Hello All,
Yesterday I took the RVF to an advanced riders course. I had zero problems turning it on and off all day long. I got home and about 4 hours later I tried to go for a ride and I have no power when I turn the key on, no lights come on the instrument panel its the strangest thing. I have checked all the fuses they seem to be in good condition. The battery is about 2 weeks old and stays on a trickle charger while it sits, currently ready 13.3 volts. Where to I begin or where can I find a good wiring diagram so I can start tracing wires. Thanks Gents and ride safe.

Have you checked the main fuse in the starter relay

It might not be the wiring but the battery itself. You can have a battery sat at 13 volts, but as soon as you put load on it, it will drop to 5 or 6!

yep.. after you get it running need to check the battery isnt being over-charged and killed.

magg has good suggestion of main fuse in the starter relay.

if thats ok and not blown loose or corroded measure battery voltage with igition switched on.

Main starter fuse was in good shape. I will check out the voltage drop with the key on. Thank you for pointing me in a direction I will report back.

Problem solved! I took apart the ignition switch and wouldnt you know it, she had 20+ years of crap corroding the contact pads. Thankfully it was an easy fix.
