TAKING ORDERS: Cosworth 56mm & 57mm Pistons for 2016

Post by g-force performance » Fri Dec 18, 2015 10:48 pm

Hi All:

I have seen my name and the mention of a very old "Cosworths have arrived" posting from 2009. viewtopic.php?f=22&t=7610
I see there is some peeked interest in getting these pistons made again, and for a while I was stuck on Piston Rings. I now have a solution. I need to know how serious people are about this. These are Formula-1 level pistons. They are no joke. They add much power, as much as 10hp, and increase the reliability of the rods and bearings by being lighter. They will be in the neighborhood of $1,800 for a set of 4 with Pistons, Pins, Circlips & Rings (everything you need).

With that, how many people are serious about getting a set of these. This will probably be the very last time I have any made. The design is owned by me, so you will not be able to just contact Cosworth and get them made yourself. If not enough people are interested, I will not make any. Here are the options:

56mm Bore
57mm Bore
For STD Length Rod (will work with stock rods)
For +3mm Length Rod (Will work with HRC Rods, or G-Force Custom Rods)

Hi Mike

I might be in the market for a set of the new Pistons & rings.
What ring would you be useing now and would it be on the shelf for a few more years and not stop like the FZR rings?

I have a set of the last batch that was made and it's still brand new in the box so was just wondering if it's possible at all for cosworth to mod them to fit your new ring?

Hope you recover from your operation asap.

Thanks
Gerhard

Is price with tax? Or + tax?
I can make it the same as the last order.

Gerhard:

I plan to buy many sets up front so we have enough for a while.
Also, I am thinking of writing Yamaha to see if I order enough, maybe, they would consider making another run. It's a long-shot, but.........

Hi Mike,
Any chance of getting hold of a set of rings for the previous batch. I'm stuck with 4 shiny Teflon coated ashtrays.

Hi Mike,
What would the CC be if i used the 57mm pistons and your +3mm rods?
Also what would the cost be for all the above (to complete 1 engine) and shipping to the UK?

Cheers

56mm = 414cc
57mm = 428cc

Rod length does not effect displacement, only bore and stroke do.

Rod length effects the thrust angle of the rod, and the dwell-time at TDC and BDC only. A longer rod has a smaller thrust angle, so it doesn't push the piston sideways into the cylinder wall as much, which reduces friction from thrust loading. A good thing. A longer rod also holds the piston at Bottom Dead Center (BDC) longer for better cylinder filling during intake stroke. Also a good thing. In turn, a longer rod increases the piston acceleration and ultimate piston speed, which could be good, or bad, depending on what you are after. A longer rod will also decrease the time at TDC, not necessarily a good thing, but also not notably bad.

I really don't know what to do. We all have some great ashtrays right now. I will see about getting a Japanese speaking friend to contact Yamaha about a special run, if I buy enough.

I did confirm that Kawasaki ZXR400 Rings are still in stock at Kawasaki, and-so far- still in production. So, if the next round of pistons is to use those rings, I will order a huge amount to keep on the shelf.

Also, I will test with the ZXR400 Rings in the original pistons. Maybe they will work. The oil wafer rings are completely different, so everyone would need to re-use those, but I don't think that's an issue. The compression rings are not as deep on the Kawasaki rings (from face to rear (Inside Diameter). So, I am concerned about the gas pocket being too large behind the rings. Let's see what testing confirms. Maybe they can be used as a replacement compression ring.

Lastly, I may see about getting a ring company to make me some as a custom order. But, generally, they require such a large volume that it's near impossible to get companies to be interested in my small quantities. We shall see.

I was just sticking my head in to say hello. I'm too broke right now with trying to do some MotoAmerica rounds to do anything with the 29. But eventually, I will be putting it back together and putting it back together in a big way. So I will be in touch.

Hope you're feeling better Mike. I will have to give you a call so we can catch up. Have you posted up about the Castec here?
